Here we go again.

Last month we told you about a hack that impacted Blackbaud, one of the major players in the educational software industry, which exposed the personal and financial data of students, former students, staff, and supporters at ten different schools.

Honor Roll School Websites: Safer, Better and Free for the First Year – Find out more

This month, The Clark County School District (CCSD) in Las Vegas, Nevada was the victim of a ransomware attack three days after its schools reopened for in-person learning. The District refused the ransom demand, so the hacker published documents containing Social Security numbers, student grades and other private information for some of its 320,000 students.

Why Does This Keep Happening?

One reason is that schools are relying on their websites more than ever. COVID has put an extra strain on sites now being utilized for remote learning and increased communication between teachers, students, administrators and parents. If that system were to go down when everyone is online, the impact would be more far-reaching than in a typical school year.

Another challenge is that hackers have become more ruthless. As CCSD discovered, data will get published if their demands are not met.

What Can You Do?

After it happens? Nothing. You can upgrade security to avoid a repeat occurrence, but the damage has already been done. The goal is to take steps to prevent such attacks before you have to contact law enforcement – and angry parents; before you can’t initiate automated paycheck distribution; before you face a decision about paying thousands of dollars to regain access to your website or risk data exposure.

If you haven’t been hit yet, now is the time to act. With Honor Roll, you’ll be working with a company that has protocols in place to deliver the security you need, so you can focus on the day-to-day challenges of running your school.
